Nordic Society for Phenomenology

During four days in late May - early June 2001 a conference entitled Phenomenology in the Nordic Countries was held at the Danish Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities in Copenhagen. The conference gathered around twenty phenomenologists from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the USA and it culminated in the founding of a Nordic Society for Phenomenology - Nordisk Selskab for Fænomenologi.

The aim of this new society is to further dialogue and cooperation between phenomenologists in the Nordic countries, and to promote scholarship, teaching, research, and publication affiliated with phenomenology. Membership is free and open to all persons interested in furthering the purpose of the Society and in participating in its activities.

The society plans to organize meetings on an annual basis, which will take place alternately between the different Nordic countries. The next meeting is scheduled to be held in Helsinki in the fall of 2002.

The executive committee of the society consists of five members, one from each of the Nordic countries. The current members are Vilhjalmur Arnason (Iceland), Hans Ruin (Sweden), Sara Heinämaa (Finland), Einar Øverenget (Norway), and Dan Zahavi (Denmark).
