SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR CIRCLE MEETING

CALL FOR PAPERS

Panel Theme: Beauvoir's Conception of Philosophical and Political Freedom

Simone de Beauvoir Circle Meeting at the Central APA in Chicago

April 20-23, 2000

There seems to be some disagreement among scholars concerning Beauvoir's conception of human freedom. The Discussion centers on how much weight Beauvoir gives to philosophical freedom over and against political freedom. What exactly is Beauvoir's view? Does she defend one kind of freedom over the other, or does she defend both kinds of freedom together? If she defends both kinds of freedom, how can she do so consistently? What textual evidence do we have for our interpretation? Our reply to this question os important because it will affect our understanding of Beauvoir's conception of the moral problem and our response to it.

We welcome submissions on this and other topics related to the work of Simone de Beauvoir. Both abstracts and completed papers are welcome. All paper submissions are anonymously reviewed. Therefore, please omit your name from the actual manuscripts, notes, and bibliography.

Please submit two copies of your contributions of no more than 2500 words for papers and 2 to 3 paragraphs for abstracts by September 15th 1999 to:
